Is the Pentax K1000 Really the Best Student Camera?

Image
Pentax K1000 overview The Pentax K1000 was introduced in 1976 and remained in production until 1997. An estimated three million (plus) units were sold. Production moved from Japan to Hong Kong in 1978, and then to China in 1990. To keep labour costs low, the Chinese cameras were made using a number of cheaper components. Chinese K1000s can be recognised by the absence of the "Asahi" name and logo on the pentaprism cover. The non-Asahi cameras are best avoided. What you get with a K1000 is a completely manual camera with a micro-prism spot focusing aid. Exposure control is determined via a battery-powered integral light meter that employs an open aperture, centre-the-needle system. Shutter speeds range from 1 to 1/1000th seconds, along with Bulb and a flash X-sync at 1/60th second. The K1000 accepts all manual focus lenses with the Pentax K bayonet mount (introduced in 1975), and K-A mount (introduced in 1983), and essential any subsequent K lenses with a sep...

The Fastest Way to Improve Your Photography Skills

Image
Receiving a new camera as a birthday or Christmas gift can be a thrilling moment. Suddenly thrust into a new world with strange words like "aperture," "ISO," and "shutter speed" can quickly deflate the joy found in the new camera. Understanding the vocabulary is just part of learning how to use a camera. Developing the eye of a true photographer takes time and training. You don't have to spend a fortune to get a feel for the art of photography if you take an online course, surf for that reputable school and settle for the best. These types of classes provide training, assignments, and feedback from professional photographers. Before you begin, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the three pillars of photography, and you'll feel much more prepared to jump in to taking classes and pictures. Aperture Aperture is the hole in the camera that allows light in. When you adjust the aperture, you are either making the hole larger to...

Easy Ways to Learn Photography At Home

Image
There are many ways to learn photography, but they all too often can feel out of reach. For example, taking a class at the local university can be expensive and time consuming. Even if the class is taught at nights or on the weekends, you will have to be accepted to the college before you can take classes. The whole process is overwhelming. There are other ways to learn photography that don't include high school transcripts or SAT scores, they include hiring a tutor or asking friend, reading instructional books, and taking an online photography school class. The path you chose will depend on the way you learn.  Tutoring Perhaps you learn best by watching someone else do a task first. When you watched your older brother ride a bike, you took in how his legs moved, the way he sat on the seat, and how he leaned when he went around corners. All of this information was channeled through your mind and into your muscles. You imitated his movements and were soon racing around...

The Hottest Camera Names in the History of Photography

Image
In 1756, Johann Christoph Voigtlander founded and gave his name to the Voigtlander optical company. Voigtlander is both the oldest name in cameras, and the most enduring. Between 1929 and 1956, Voigtlander produced a range of medium format folding cameras all called "Bessa", another long-lived name. In 1898 the Voigtlander company issued stock, and in 1925 Schering (a German pharmaceutical company) became the majority shareholder. In 1956, Schering sold its shares to the Carl Zeiss Foundation, and Voigtlander and Zeiss integrated. In 1972 Zeiss/Voigtlander stopped producing cameras, and the Voigtlander brand was sold to Rollei. In 1982 Rollei collapsed and Plusfoto took over the name until selling it to Ringfoto in 1997. Today, the German company Ringfoto is still producing Voigtlander branded cameras and lenses. Their 35mm rangefinder, and medium format models all use variants of the name Bessa (e.g. Bessa III W). In 1999 Cosina leased the rights to the Voi...

Who Still Makes Film Cameras?

Image
There are several different types of film camera still in production today, including five groups that I'm going to gloss-over, since they are not particular interesting to anyone interested in photography per se. 1. Disposable cameras are still made by the major brands of film manufacturers: Agfa, Fuji Film, Ilford and Kodak, along with many less well-known makers. This type of camera continues to be fashionable as wedding favours, expendable tourist cameras, and for carrying in vehicles to record accidents. The popularity of the disposable camera has probably been boosted by the rise of "Lomography", were a "less than perfect" style is appreciated. 2. Lomography has doubtless also played a role in the resurgence of interest in Pinhole cameras, and there are numerous cameras and camera-kits available. 3. There are also plenty of cameras that are neither disposable nor pinhole, but all fit under the general umbrella of Lomography. That is to sa...

What Is the Best Selling Film Camera of All Time?

Image
Evaluation of the best selling film cameras of all time has to start with a guess. Logically, the candidates should be so obvious that their names are etched in our minds, and accordingly the big sellers can be expected to be humble and quite unexciting models. Clearly, some of the best selling film cameras have been those with the longest production runs, so I have taken care to differentiate between distinctly different models that shared a common name. For example, a Zorki 4, which is in my list, is a different camera to its similar successor, the Zorki 4k. In addition, determination of the best selling cameras is not necessary a matter of sequencing volumes. It should be recognised that the world of say the 1930s was a very different place to the 1980s. In the earlier period there was less disposable income, less leisure time, more trade barriers, and a smaller population. The sale of 1 million cameras in 1930 would have been a far more significant accomplishment that...

Photography is an art. It has to be done with utmost care and understanding. While photographs can be anything that any person can take, the best of photography should always be left to the pros. The pros to this industry have developed a few tricks of trade, following which you can actually get to develop your photography to fall in the category of the professional ones. 1. Group Shots One important shot at every wedding is the shot wherein all the guests are found in the shot. This is the shot in the album that will get the family the feel of the togetherness the family had at the time of the wedding. The best way to arrange this would be to get all the guests high up at one place just after the ceremony. The key to the high place is to get the faces of all the people in one shot, and also to get the shot in the quickest possible way. 2. Flash Fill If you are shooting after the ceremony or taking posed shots, a little flash might have to be attached. The sho...

Image
The Uniqueness of Photography Photography is an art that gives a unique and un-conceived view of each and every thing. Each photographer, being a unique artist tries to capture each and every photo in a unique way. In photography, each angle and pose is important. Based on these major factors, photography can be classified in various types. One of them is the portrait photography. Main Features of Portrait Photography For the professional photographers, portrait photography is not a new issue. It is basically portraiture of any person or object's face. Don't Allow Film Photography to Fade Away

Image
Photography is embedded in our lives, from birth to death, and at every stage in between. Even those of us with little interest in photography have most probably carried photographs in our wallets, and hung them on our walls or placed them on a work desk, and personally snapped a few shots. Since the advent of digital photography, we have been taking more photos, and using them for an increased range of activities, especially the wider sharing of images with others. Today, photographs are so common that they can almost escape our notice. Photography first entered the lives of the general public in 1888, when George Eastman invented and marketed his original Kodak camera. It was a very simple box that came pre-loaded with a 100-exposure roll of film. Once used, the whole camera was sent back to Kodak, where it was reloaded and returned to the customer, while the first roll of film underwent processing. The simplicity of the camera and film processing made photography acces...

The Rise of the Japanese Camera Manufacturers

Image
In the early years of the last century, long-established German companies dominated the world of film cameras. Brands such as Leitz and Zeiss were giants, and celebrated for their precision engineering and optical performance. Japan, on the other hand, was a nation emerging from isolation, experiencing rapid growth and structural change. Lacking in the natural resources necessary to fuel an emerging industrialised nation, it had expanded its territories, and much of the country's manufacturing was dedicated to further intensifying military might. Many of today's well know Japanese camera manufactures began as suppliers of optical equipment to the Military (making things such as binoculars, sights, and periscopes). The end of WWII changed everything for the two nations. The German camera industry was in ruins. Worse yet, the division of Germany into two zones physically separated manufacturing plants. In the West Leitz survived intact, but others in the East were f...
